Panic Attacks Causes - What Are The Common Causes Of Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder is a pretty scary disorder to have and those panic attacks causes can be quite varied from person to person. We live in a very stressful world and there is just so much tension and stress in so many people worldwide and as a result of all this stress there is also a big number of people that suffer from panic and/or anxiety disorders.

One of the big causes of panic attack is phobias. People have many different phobias such as public speaking, fear of having an accident while driving, fear of large crowds, among others and sometimes this fear can become irrational. When fears become irrational then they can become a real problem, as this is when you may start developing a panic disorder.

This fear can become so strong that when a person does come across their feared situation they could have a panic attack. Once a person has a panic attack then they are faced with a new fear on top of the old one, they now also have the fear of having an attack when faced with that situation that they are already afraid of. The fear of another attack is enough to make them have another one.

Trauma is another common cause of panic disorder and when someone is faced with a devastating loss such as a loss of job, marriage breakup, loss of a family member, or even a major illness or surgery, can lead to this disorder. The mind is put under enormous pressure during traumatic events and in some people it is just too much to handle and the way they think will begin to change and even become irrational.

Another cause of panic attacks is underlying disorders like depression. It is reasonably common for someone with depression to develop panic attacks, although not everyone with depression will. Your mind is already in a very negative path if you have depression and the constant negative thinking can develop fears of always being in depression amongst other fears.

The mind really is an amazing thing but unfortunately it isn't always rational and when that irrational part of the brain becomes too strong it can be difficult to change it back to thinking rationally again. The body responds to dangerous situations with its panic reaction and this is normal, but when the mind is thinking irrationally it is letting the body think that it is in a dangerous situation when it actually isn't.

The good news is that although it is difficult to change the way your mind is working, it is possible and you can overcome your fears and your panic attacks.

Panic attacks causes are not all that relevant to the cure. To overcome your panic disorder you need to try to think positively and be determined to beat it. There are some very simple techniques available that can help you to get rid of this disorder for good.

Is it a Panic Attack or Heart Attack? Know the Difference!

It’s a pretty common scenario for most first time panic attack sufferers to immediately think they’re having a heart attack. After all, one of the most prominent symptoms of a panic attack is a POUNDING heartbeat that seems to flutter out of control. It’s pretty terrifying. Plus, if you’re unfamiliar with the symptoms of a panic attack, a heart attack seems like a natural conclusion to what you’re feeling.

Because it’s so common to mistake the chest pains that normally accompany panic attacks for a life threatening heart attack, this article will clear up the confusion and differentiate between the two. Upfront, I just want to say that people don’t die from panic attacks.

So even though it feels like your heart is going to pop right out of your chest during one of these episodes, the fact is, attacks like these are analogous to intense levels of cardio exercise with one major safety net. Extreme cardio exercise may potentially lead to heart attack whereas a panic attack will force you to pass out or faint before any real damage is done.

That’s because the physical symptoms of a panic attack are triggered by an offset in breathing (usually hyperventilation). Your heart isn’t being strained; it’s being thrown into a natural fight or flight response. Also, your heart isn’t what’s causing the panic attack – your mind is.

The fear combined with the physical sensation creates a natural sense of urgency.

Every year, thousands (if not millions) of people having chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain or numbness in the left arm and tingling throughout the body end up in a hospital emergency room because they believe they’re having a heart attack. Typically, a few tests are run, and the patient is sent home because the nature of the attack he or she experienced is one of panic, not coronary.

Here, I’ll outline the symptoms of both a heart attack and a panic attack so you can see their subtle differences.

The two share several common symptoms. For instance, the chest pain from a heart attack is focused in the center of the chest and is crushing, as if a heavy weight is sitting on top of the chest. It is usually persistent, may radiate to the left arm, neck or back and lasts longer than 5 - 10 minutes. Heart attack victims don't hyperventilate (unless the person's fear of heart attack triggers a panic attack), any tingling they experience is usually confined to the left arm, and vomiting is common.

During a panic attack, chest pain is localized over the heart and described as "sharp, and comes and goes. The pain usually intensifies with breathing in and out, and pressing on the center of the chest. Panic attack may cause nausea, but vomiting is very rare. If tingling is present, the entire body tingles. Hyperventilation almost always precedes a panic attack symptoms If the location of the pain moves to the center of the chest, doesn't go away within 10 minutes, is accompanied by more than one incident of vomiting or diarrhea, or goes away and returns a few minutes later, you should immediately get medical attention.

Now, if you’re having panic attacks, you may be inclined to worry about how these episodes are affecting your heart long-term.

Panic attacks don't cause heart disease, and some experts say that they actually affect the heart similarly to the way cardio exercise does, by causing the release of adrenaline, increasing the heart rate, and expanding blood vessels. On the same note, heart disease doesn't cause panic attacks, although a person with a history of panic attacks who is actually having a coronary may also panic for fear of worsening the heart damage, dying or being disabled.

That said, stress is NEVER good for your overall health so it’s important to start treating your panic and anxiety right away. You won’t hear me say that stress benefits your health of course but try not to think of stress as some terminal condition.

The truth is if you don’t have traditional risk factors – you’re not a smoker, you don’t have high blood pressure, obesity, have a family history of heart attack, your risk should be very low.

If you’re having panic attacks, chances are you have high levels of anxiety and this kind of constant stress can lead to obsessions about your health. I’m here to tell you that if you take care of yourself with exercise and proper eating (something you should be doing anyway), you don’t need to worry about heart failure during a panic attack. It simply won’t happen. The two scenarios (panic attacks and heart attacks) are completely separate animals and should be treated as such.

Now that said, just because you won’t die from a panic attack, that doesn’t mean you should just live with the debilitating anxiety it creates. There IS help for you.

Using the correct techniques and exercises, you CAN learn to control and even completely eliminate panic attacks.

Herbal Solutions for Panic Attacks

If you have ever had a panic attack, you don't look forward to another one. The "fight-or flight" response in your body is involuntarily turned on and your nervous system signals your adrenal glands to start pumping out stress hormones to get you ready to either run away or turn and fight.

Your muscles tense, your heartbeat speeds up, and your breathing becomes more rapid. You might feel like you are smothering, claustrophobic or you may experience an urgency to get away. On top of that, you may get hot flashes, sweating, and/or chills and trembling, plus numbness, tingling sensations, dizziness, and nausea.

You become overwhelmed by an extreme sense of fear and impending disaster and you lose your ability to think calmly and clearly while experiencing a distorted sense of time and a feeling of unreality.

In the face of a physical threat, accident, or natural disaster, this type of response is normal and can be life-saving. But panic attacks that occur unexpectedly in the presence of normal events can be debilitating. They may happen with no forewarning, at any time of the day or night, and last several seconds or more than half an hour.

The triggers for panic attacks are unpredictable. Most panic attacks are set off by some minor or major stressor. But panic attacks also can be triggered by changes in emotions, or as a response to certain drugs, foods, allergies (including hidden food allergies), hypoglycemia, and illnesses.

A panic attack is an example of an acute anxiety disorder and can affect teens to middle-agers and beyond. Women are reported to experience panic attacks twice as often as men but some believe that is only because men are more reticent to report panic attacks.

Recent studies point to a complex set of causes and panic attacks are regarded as a treatable psychobiological condition (i.e. having both psychological and biological causes). Successful resolution of panic attacks requires an integrated, multi-modality approach.

Even though panic attacks are not a simple condition and there are no simple answers for their successful resolution, herbal therapy can be useful as part of an integrated, multi-modality approach.

When you experience anxiety, your body releases a set of neurotransmitters called catecholamines, which stimulate your central nervous system and activate your sympathetic nervous system. Sometimes your sympathetic nervous system (the high alert part of your nervous system) can get stuck in the “on” mode leaving you in an ongoing state of anxiety - a fertile ground for panic attacks.

A class of herbs called nervines helps to turn off the sympathetic nervous system by gently facilitating the functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system – the part of the nervous system that prompts relaxation - helping us to wind down and come off “high alert”.

It is a good idea to experiment with different anti-anxiety herbs before you are in a crisis or panic situation. Try out several herbs in varying doses. Start with a low dose and increase if needed so that you will know how the herb affects you and how to use it when you need it.

Some effective herbal nervines to consider using:

Oatstraw (Avena sativa) – the green milky tops of oatstraw provide a wonderful soothing, nourishing and gentle herb for frayed and stressed nervous systems. Oatstraw has a restorative effect on an exhausted nervous system reliably strengthening the whole nervous system after prolong stress. Oatstraw has both an immediate effect (useful when experiencing extreme nervousness and anxiety) and a more long-term restorative effect. Oatstraw is well tolerated by even highly sensitive people and is used for nervous debility, stress, weak nerve and energy force, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and general fatigue.

German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla/ Matricaria recutita) – an all time favorite –because it works. Chamomile tones the nervous system, relaxes your muscles and calms nervous digestion. It has mild sedating properties and is not as strong an herbal sedative as valerian or passionflower. However, chamomile is a great option for anxiety in children or teens and for anxiety associated with mild sleep problems. If you are allergic to ragweed, asters, or chrysanthemums you are better off choosing another anti-anxiety herb.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) –has mild sedative properties and is useful in conditions of nervous agitation with sleep problems and digestive complaints. Lemon balm is especially useful for over-anxiety that causes digestive problems such as nausea, bloating, and colic like pains. Traditionally lemon balm was used to lift the spirits and encourage longevity. Lemon balm is a relaxing tonic for anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and mild depression and its actions will quiet the racing heart that often accompanies anxiety. It has mild anti-thyroid effects and is best avoided by people with hypothyroid problems.

Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia) –tonifies and relaxes the nervous system and is useful for anxiety of all types especially anxiety and irritability that is hormonally based such as premenstrual syndrome. It is a sedative nervine and has mild anti-spasmodic and anti-hypertensive effects. Skullcap is a great herb to use when your anxiety is accompanied by a runaway mind that is stuck on worry. It is tolerated well by most people and has few side effects.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) – one of the most well known anti-anxiety herbs, valerian is a potent herb whose active ingredients, valepotriates, bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain (similarly to the drug Valium). The use of valerian does not, however, result in dependence or the development of tolerance but instead tones the nervous system.

Valerian can be used to improve the sleep quality and relax both the skeletal and smooth muscles. Valerian should not be used for those with chronic exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, thyroid disorders, and depression as it may increase anxiety, worsen present symptoms, and/or result in excessive restlessness in these conditions.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) – a strong calming, anti-spasmodic herb that is useful for severe daytime anxiety. Passionflower is also a good choice for middle of the night waking terrors, nightmares, and the onset of sudden anxiety feelings. It acts as a central nervous system depressant giving a calming, relaxing and anti-anxiety effect and is specific for anxiety related to insomnia, muscle tension, restlessness, and nervousness due to worry, overwork, hysteria, or excessive excitement. If you are taking an MAO inhibitor, you should avoid taking passionflower except under supervision.

Stress Relief Tea

Here is a simple herbal tea mixture that I have found effective in my private practice working with women having mood and energy problems.

Mix together equal parts of the following dry herbs:

•Oatstraw

•Lemon Balm

•Skullcap

•Nettles

•Orange

•Chamomile

Use 1-2 teaspoons of the mixture and steep covered in 8 oz. of boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

The use of herbal nervines as part of an integrative program can help restore a sense of calm and well being, soothe distress, stabilize a confused and overwhelmed energy system, and foster clear thinking.

If you are taking anti-anxiety and/or anti-depressant medications or other medications, have a diagnosed condition or illness, are pregnant, breastfeeding, elderly or very young it is important to consult a knowledgeable health care practitioner before using herbs. Consult a licensed physician for diagnosis and treatment of any medical conditions.

Medication for Anxiety Disorders The Various Options

There are many different anxiety disorders, but their one common underlying characteristic is the overwhelming and incessant worry and fear experienced. For those who suffer from anxiety disorders, there is a variety of treatments available to help you overcome this illness and live a normal life free from panic attacks. These range from medication to therapy and alternative medicines. Often, the different treatments can be combined together, depending on each individual’s needs as well as the particular anxiety disorder experienced.

Medications is a common treatment of anxiety disorders used to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety disorders and panic attacks, and are consisting of anti-anxiety drugs, beta blockers and antidepressants. Whilst this may seem ideal, it is always better to cure the problem at its roots – identify the cause of your panic attacks and overcoming it through behavioral cognitive therapy. Medication is a quick fix but it does not cure the problem. Also, it may cause a myriad of severe side effects, such as nausea and dizzy spells.

Anti Anxiety Drugs

Benzodiazepines are sedatives used to treat symptoms of panic attacks by slowing down the nervous system. They have few side effects, but the human body adapts to the intake of this drug and with time, higher dosages are necessary to see any effect. Generic brand names often prescribed are Clonazepam, Lorazepam and Alprazolam, anti-anxiety drug used for social anxiety disorders, GAD and panic disorders. There is a high danger of being addicted to these drugs, and it is necessary to slowly wean off it as you may experience withdrawal symptoms if you halt medication consumption.

Azapirones are a newer variety of anti anxiety drugs which take a longer time to take effect, ranging from 2 weeks to a month. They are usually prescribed for GAD and obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), and are less addictive with minimal withdrawal symptoms.

Anti Depressants

Anti depressants have been used for treating anxiety disorders, and take a longer time to see the effects, ranging from 4 to 6 weeks. They are often prescribed in place of anti anxiety drugs as there is less risk of addiction, but they have severe side effects including suicidal thoughts and agitation. They may also increase depression.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used to assist neurotransmitters by acting on the serotonin in the brain. They have severe withdrawal effects as well as side effects, although these are of a lesser magnitude than the older varieties of anti depressants. They are commonly prescribed for OCD, GAD and panic disorders.

Tricyclics and Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are older classes of antidepressants. Tricyclics can be combined with SSRIs for anxiety disorders except for OCD. However, MAOIs should not be taken with SSRIs as they react to produce hallucinations, seizures and blood pressure changes.

Beta Blockers

Beta blockers are used to treat heart conditions, but are also prescribed for anxiety disorders. By blocking the effects of norepinephrines, it is able to alleviate symptoms of panic attacks such as tremors and heart palpitations. They are hence useful for situations where the user is aware of the possibility of panic attacks occurring, such as before public speaking.

Anxiety disorders are treatable via medication, and usually treatments are a mix of different medications and combined with therapy. You should always seek your doctor’s advice in determining the type of anxiety disorder, and the appropriate medication that is suitable. Do not give up on medication if you do not see immediate effects, as it is possible that your body takes more time to react to the drugs. Alternatively, you may feel that another variety of treatment may be more suitable as well.

Anxiety Attacks and Perimenopause

Perimenopause worsen existing anxiety disorders and bring it to the surface. In fact, a woman who frequently experience anxiety and depression in her perimenopause period will likely to suffer worse cases of anxiety during menopause stage. In other words, anxiety attacks and perimenopause or menopause almost always go hand in hand.

This is due to the hormone imbalances and life changes during perimenopause and menopause which often lead to stress and depression thus heightening the risk of anxiety attacks. Some negative thoughts and attitudes of women that cause stress and depression: fear of becoming older, facing unwanted responsibilities, reacting negatively to intolerant husbands who might insist on sex, feeling of unimportant, coping with all the physical changes, etc.

Women with high self-confidence and self-esteem usually have lesser chances to suffer anxiety and depression. However, if life-long disproportions have not been put right before, perimenopause may exacerbate the circumstances.

Some anxiety symptoms that may occur during anxiety attacks in menopause and perimenopause include panic attacks, panting, extreme tiredness, feeling confused, cold sensation, heart palpitations, excessive sweating, hot flashes and nausea.

Below are some tips to help you in dealing with anxiety attacks and symptoms of anxiety:

Intake a balance diet
  • Reduce the intake of sugar, alcohol, caffeine and soft drinks.
  • Both caffeine and alcohol disrupt sleep. In the long term, this usually cause anxiety symptoms.
  • Consume complex carbohydrates. Sufficient amount of complex carbohydrates make you stay full longer and help eliminating stress and anxiety.
  • Drink a lot at least eight glasses of water daily to prevent fatigue, headaches and stress.
  • Make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals from your diet include calcium, magnesium, vitamin B-6, iron, potassium, selenium and chromium.

Exercise regularly
Exercise regularly relaxes your body and alleviates stress which in turn reduces anxiety symptoms. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.

Do things that you enjoy
Do things that you enjoy will help you to relax and diminish stress such as chat with a friend, listen to music, play music, read a book, walk around, etc.

Get some good sleep
Try to get some good sleep when you're feeling anxious and stress to relax your body and mind.

Maintain a positive attitude
Negative attitude and feeling will only ruin your day, so try to keep a positive attitude regardless of so many external forces come to you.

For some pre menopausal women who fail to deal with stress and anxiety effectively, they may need to go through therapy with a therapist in order to get back their loss life.

In worse cases, some women may need anxiety prescriptions to relieve and protect them from the enervating results of stress and extreme emotional distress. Anxiety prescriptions usually vary in the dosage and desired results. Some of anxiety prescriptions that may be given to the patient include benzodiazepines for temporary relief of anxiety symptoms and non-bensodiazepines that help patient to reach a relaxed condition.

Anxious is one of individual's natural reactions to life distresses and problems thus there's nothing wrong to feel anxious sometimes. However, it becomes abnormal when your worry and concern prevent you from living a definite life you would otherwise have. If this is the case, you should do something about it and never let anxiety attacks and perimenopause get over you. Change your life, eat a balance diet, exercise regularly, maintain good habits, stay focus only on positive things in life, and get help from a good therapist when needed.

Kidney Health: It's Not Just About Kidney Stones

A kidney is a reddish brown, bean-shaped organ that filters waste minerals and toxins from the blood. The kidneys regulate acid concentration and the kidneys maintain the water balance in the human body by producing urine.

Kidneys also make hormones that help keep bones strong blood healthy.

Kidneys that aren't functioning properly allow harmful toxins to build up. This may causes blood pressure to rise, the body will accumulate fluids, and may not produce enough red blood cells.

Here are the most common kidney problems.

Kidney Stones: A kidney stone is a hard mass that accumulates in the urinary tract when crystals separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. In most people, urine contains chemicals that prevent these crystals from forming kidney stones. People who suffer from kidney stones, for reasons that aren't always completely understood, don't have inhibitors that prevent crystal formation.

Anyone who has ever had kidney stones will tell you the pain can be so severe that it reduces them to tears.

Kidney stones are not a product of modern diets or lifestyle. Evidence of kidney stones has been found in 7000 year old human remains in Egypt.

Men tend to get kidney stones more often than women.

Kidney Infections: If a person has low resistance, germs from the bladder can travel up the ureters to the kidneys and begin to multiply. An acute kidney infection starts suddenly with severe symptoms, then quickly comes to an end. A chronic kidney infection develops slowly and grows worse with time. A chronic kidney infection can lead to kidney failure.

Kidney Cysts: A kidney cyst is an abnormal pouch that contains fluid. The simple kidney cyst is the most common form.

The cause of a simple kidney cyst isn't completely understood. But there's no evidence that kidney cysts are an inherited condition. One or more kidney cysts may develop at a time on the small tubes in the kidneys.

Kidney cysts do not generally present symptoms and usually kidney cysts cause no harm. Very often people don't even know they have a kidney cyst. However, a kidney cyst can cause pain if it grows large enough to press on other organs.

Sometimes a kidney cyst can become infected and start to bleed. If that happens, a kidney cyst can increase blood pressure, but it usually don't impair kidney function.

A kidney cyst won't require treatment if no complications are present. But if symptoms occur, a kidney cyst may require surgery.

Kidney Cancer: Kidney cancer accounts for approximately three percent of all adult cancers in the United States. The American Cancer Society reports that more than 30,000 new cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year and about 12,000 people die from kidney cancer annually.

Kidney cancer tends to appear in adults in middle age, usually after age 50. Kidney cancer strikes men twice as often as women.

The most common type of kidney cancer occurs in the part of the kidney that filters blood and produces the urine. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell cancer, or renal cell carcinoma. Another type of adult kidney cancer is a tumor which arises in the part of the kidney where the urine collects. This type of kidney cancer is called transitional cell carcinoma. The most frequent sign of kidney cancer in adults is blood in the urine.

Symptoms and treatment for the kidney disorders described above can be found at http://www.kidneys.name and http://www.kidneystones.name

Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism

One of the main causes of hyperthyroidism is Graves' Disease. Graves' Disease, an autoimmune disease that sees an individual's thyroid gland as a foreign object invading the body and produces antibodies to attack the gland. This causes the thyroid gland to produce a greater than normal amount of thyroxine. As a person's thyroxine level increases, the body's metabolic rate increases as well. A higher metabolism rate can lead to a number of health problems, including irregular heartbeat and anxiety disorders.

Graves' Disease occurs mostly in middle-aged women, but it has also been known to occur in children and the elderly. There is said to be a genetic predisposition of the disease, but the cause remains unknown.

Symptoms of Graves' Disease include a sensitivity to heat, weight loss, brittle hair, restlessness, muscle weakness, increased appetite, tremors, blurred or double vision, nervousness, redness and swelling of the eyes, fatigue, changes in heart beat and sex drive. While Graves' Disease is an incurable ailment, it is not life threatening and can very well be treated with anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgery to remove most of the thyroid gland.

While most individuals seem to do well on anti-thyroid medication, surgery may just be the best option in certain situations, such as individuals that have problems where the thyroid gland is interfering with the ability to swallow. Radioactive iodine destroys part or all of the thyroid gland and renders it incapable of overproducing thyroxine. The treatment consists of swallowing a pill containing radioactive iodine. Side effects are minimal and the treatment is relatively painless.

More serious complications of Graves' Disease are weakened heart muscle that can lead to heart failure, osteoporosis, or possible severe emotional disorders. However, these complications are only likely to appear if Graves' Disease is prolonged, untreated, or improperly treated. By visiting your doctor for a checkup and discussing your symptoms and treatment options for Graves' Disease long before your symptoms begin to turn serious, you can safely treat Graves' Disease and live happier and healthier knowing that although there is no cure for Graves' Disease, it can be successfully treated.

How to Deal with the Catch-22's of Corporate Bureaucracy at Work

Corporate life can take a serious toll on the mind, particularly if you happen to be the one caught amidst the company's hustle and bustle. There are a thousand things that need to be done any given shift, and you'd need at least a shift just to get one of those tasks to be done properly. There are also the occasional added duties of the typical employee, such as the meeting with the boss, rant sessions with fellow employees, and the pressures and responsibilities that the typical worker adds to his already overwhelming set of problems. The need for stress relief is most commonly seen among people who are doing the dry grunt-work of a company, the ones working the trenches at the front lines of the "corporate war."

Of course, a company employee may not necessarily be fighting a "war" against the company's enemies, or business rivals, as the case may be. For anyone who has ever read the novel "Catch-22," the rather daunting concept of a soldier fighting the rigid bureaucracy of his own army is a humorous, unpleasant yet all too realistic storyline. Unfortunately, for some corporate employees, the Catch-22 is an everyday ordeal. They find themselves willing to fight even their own corporate bosses. Even worse is when there is no convenient or regular source of stress relief, which tends to wear down a person's mind and makes the situation much worse. Once a person thinks the situation is getting worse, it inevitably really does become worse, through some dismiss it as a mere quirk of fate. Yes, this sounds terribly pessimistic, but there are several people who go to their jobs day after day --- resigned to go through the daily drudgery.

The fact is, there are always a few disgruntled, disenfranchised, and disillusioned employees who will look at the corporate power structure and only see the Catch-22 bureaucracy. They literally see policies leading them around in circles, with stress relief being just a pipe dream --- with each step leading to the path of madness. Of course, madness is not included as a job skill requirement although in some lines of work that involve creativity, being somewhat "looney" is an unwritten prerequisite.

Dealing with a Catch-22 bureaucracy can be taxing on your mental health, whether you're fighting it or you're trying to work with it. There is ample anecdotal evidence to show that attempting to work within a bureaucracy that keeps on going around in circles can drive employees to develop frequent bouts of nausea. Besides the nausea, chronic fatigue also seems to be a growing problem among employees that attempt to survive in a Catch-22 environment. Mental fatigue is also a problem, as some people tend to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out how to get out of the mess that the company's policies have gotten them into, all the while realizing that any attempt to get out is likely just going to get them deeper into the problem.

Naturally, from a realistic point of view, the above situation is hardly feasible, but if work-related stress and anxiety are not dealt with in a timely and effective manner, it can lead to some unpleasant situations. For the most part, the common reaction when the situations get extreme is to simply try and find a way to escape, or at least get into a position where the bureaucracy is less constrained. In a corporate environment, the former is little more than just removing yourself from the company's employ, and the latter means working within the constraints to get into a position of power. Of course, working twice as hard just to get away from the bureaucracy means the company will be getting more work out of an employee, but not have to pay more. Why does that sound like exactly what your typical corporate slave driver actually wants? If it does start sounding that way, then it is a safe assumption that your stress and anxiety at work has gone past being an anxiety disorder and developed into a full-blown paranoia. Next thing you know, you'll start thinking they're all out to get rid of you.

Anxiety Depression and how I cured it.

For many years, I suffered from anxiety depression. I tried everything, from psychoanalysis to medications but nothing really worked. Some things helped for a little while to relief my anxiety, but eventually it would always come back.

One day I was feeling particularly down, I saw a friend coming towards me on the road. We said hello and he told me about somebody he met in the pub the night before. He said she was a very happy, radiant and relaxed person. I felt a little pang of jealousy because with my anxiety depression this was exactly the opposite of myself. He said that her secret was Vipassana meditation. I had never heard of this type of meditation, but my friend gave me the website address. He said it was a great way for treating anxiety so the same evening I was on the internet and had booked for a course.

The course was great and I felt better than I had felt for many years. But coming home into the stress of everyday life was a different matter. Soon my anxiety attacks were back again. I tried meditation but as soon as I closed my eyes all the problems of the day came flooding back to me so it was impossible to meditate. After many years of meditation and many courses and moving away from my old life, my anxiety depression has disappeared, but it has taken a long time and a lot of effort. I am certain however that my anxiety will never come back. Vipassana really is an excellent anxiety depression treatment method. But it comes with a cost of time and effort, not something that many people can afford.

Luckily, if it is just anxiety depression you wish to cure, then there are other methods. I wish I had known about them back then but I did not. Vipassana is a very involved spiritual path and although it helped me well, you need to be certain that this is the path you wish to travel. It has many more benefits than just curing anxiety and stress.

There are other methods which will help cure anxiety depression effectively. One especially I found very good and it is especially designed for people with a lot of stress in their lives, which is usually the cause of anxiety depression. So rest assured, there are effective methods to control stress and get rid of anxiety depression without going the path that I have gone. But if you wish to know more about Vipassana meditation, I will be happy to share my experiences with you.

Hydrocodone: Prescription Drug Abuse & Testing

Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine.

Hydrocodone Prescription, Dosage & Administration:

Hydrocodone is an orally active, narcotic analgesic and antitussive. Being a narcotic analgesic, it is prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe pain & being a antitussive, it is prescribed as a medicine used to suppress or relieve coughing.

Hydrocodone comes both as a tablet and also in liquid form & thus can easily be taken orally. 5 mg of hydrocodone is equivalent to 30 mg of codeine when administered orally. Earlier hydrocodone and morphine were considered equipotent for pain control in humans. However, it is now considered that a dose of 15 mg of hydrocodone is equivalent to 10 mg of morphine. Hydrocodone is considered to be morphine-like in all respects and thus, final dosage is adjusted by physician according to the severity of the pain and the response of the patient.

Hydrocodone Abuse:

Vicodin i.e. hydrocodone in combination with acetaminophen, is a commonly abused version of hydrocodone in United States and Canada. Vicodin, as with all narcotic analgesics, can be habit forming---causing dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms if not used as it is prescribed. The presence of acetaminophen in hydrocodone-containing products deters many drug users from taking excessive amounts.

Effects of Hydrocodone Abuse:

Some of the common side effects of drug abuse include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, drowsiness, euphoria, vomiting, and constipation. Some of the lesser common side effects are various allergic reactions, blood disorders, mood swings, mental fogginess, anxiety, lethargy, difficulty in urinating, ureter spasms, rashes and irregular or depressed respiration etc.

Physical Dependence on Hydrocodone:

Opioid analgesics such as Hydrocodone may cause psychological and physical dependence. Physical dependence results in withdrawal symptoms in patients who abruptly discontinue the drug. Physical dependence usually does not occur to a clinically significant degree until after several weeks of continued opioid usage, but it may occur after as little as a week of opioid use.

Commercial Status in United States:

There are over 200 products containing hydrocodone in the U.S. When sold commercially in the US, hydrocodone is always combined with another medication due to a separate federal regulation. In its most usual forms, hydrocodone is combined with acetaminophen. Such commercial hydrocodone products which are combined with acetaminophen are known by various trademark names such as Vicodin & Lortab. Hydrocodone also can be combined with aspirin (Trade name: Lortab ASA), ibuprofen (Trade name: Vicoprofen), & certain antihistamines (Trade name: Hycomine).

Pure Hydrocodone tablets or capsules are not offered currently by any USA drug company. The cough preparation Codiclear DH is the purest available US hydrocodone item, containing guaifenesin and small amounts of ethanol as active ingredients.

With such a huge number of Hydrocodone containing products, the possibility of misuse and addiction remains substantial. As a result, Sales and production of this drug has increased significantly in recent years & so has its diversion and illicit use. To limit abuse of opioid drugs like Dilaudid it is necessary to properly assess the patient, employ proper prescription practices, periodically re-evaluate the opioid therapy, and properly dispense and store the drugs.

Hydrocodone Testing:

Hydrocodone may not cause a positive result in a standard opiate urine test. Many opiate tests test only for morphine (which both codeine and heroin break down into). This is true for both home/business kits and laboratory testing.

However, there are several specialized home and laboratory testing kits available that specifically detects hydrocodone (& hydromorphone, its metabolic product). So test results usually depend on the particular type of test that is used and whether or not laboratory verification is done. If a home drug test is given and the opiate test shows a positive result (due to hydromorphone use), laboratory verification might not result in a positive test because the lab may only test for morphine.

Panic Attack Treatments and Prevention

Most people with panic attack disorder are treated in their primary care setting, which is not surprising, since the physical symptoms of a panic disorder can cause people to seek care for what they perceive as a physical ailment.

Difficulties in the diagnosis of panic attack disorder in this setting argue for the possible value of population based screening for the disorder in primary care, which is currently recommended for major depression. Panic disorder is associated with severe disability and work impairment in people receiving primary care, even if the effects of comorbid physical and depressive illness are accounted for. The quality of primary care given to people with panic disorder (and other anxiety/agoraphobia disorders) is not the best; only 19-40% of people are estimated to receive the minium standards accepeted for evidence based treatment. In addition to detection and diagnosis difficulties, many other barriers exist, including uncertainty about where to seek help, insufficient organization of primary care to treat chronic disease and problems with insurance coverage and concerns about cost of care (especially in the USA)

New approaches are needed to overcome these barriers and to improve delivery of health care for people with panic attack disorder. Other promising approaches that could supplement care provided by primary-care physicians, or that might be used alone for some patients, include self-help treatments for which computer (internet-based) delivery approaches are being increasingly proposed.

Because the onset of panic disorder peaks late in adolescence, prevention efforts could be best directed at or before this critical developmental period. In a study, 150 individuals presenting to the emergency room with panic attacks were assigned to 1 h of contact with a clinician from whom they received reassurance or exposure instruction. The exposure group improved on all measures of anxiety and panic after 6 months, compared with controls. 40% of the sample group met criteria for panic disorder, so this investigation was not a pure prevention study. In another study, 151 university students with at least one panic attack in the past year and moderate anxiety sensitivity were assigned to be put on a waiting list or to undergo a 5-h, cognitive-behavioral workshop.148 6 months later, 13•6% of controls developed panic disorder, compared with 1•8% of individuals in the workshop group. Increased research into methods for the detection and identification of individuals at risk of panic disorder (e.g., children of patients with the disorder or behaviorally inhibited children) will be crucial.

Anxiety In Young Children

Just as young children can experience depression, they can also suffer from anxiety. A child's world rapidly expands, and because everything changes so fast, becoming an anxious child is not uncommon at all. The anxiety does, however, require treatment. The anxiety that children feel, however, is usually easier "defined" or "understood" than that anxiety that adults feel.

For example, a child between the ages of 3 and 6 may fear monsters under the bed. As adults, we know that there are no monsters under the bed, but this is a very real fear for a child of that age. Toddlers often suffer from separation anxiety -- not wanting to be left with anyone other than their parent or parents. This is more than being "choosy." They are experiencing a very real anxiety or fear.

Babies do not necessarily suffer from separation anxiety, but they can start to feel anxiety when they are in the presence of a stranger. Have you ever seen a toddler bury his/her head in the parent's lap when you smiled at them? That is anxiety at play. Older, preteen children are more aware of things going on in the world and start to fear natural disasters, accidents, and even war.

Some anxieties can be outgrown. For example, the baby who feels a bit anxious around strangers may outgrow those feelings as they get a little older. But old fears are often replaced with new fears. The child stops fearing strangers, but starts fearing being without their parent (separation anxiety), and once they get past that anxiety, they may start fearing monsters.

Children need to be reassured that they are safe. You should watch for the signs of anxiety in your child, and if you see those signs, you need to try to determine what your child is anxious about. You may or may not be able to reassure the child and help to dispel their fear.

The signs of anxiety in a child include clinging, being impulsive, nervous movements, trouble sleeping, sweaty or clammy hands, an increased heart rate, breathing faster than usual, feeling nauseous, frequent headaches, and frequent stomach aches.

What is Holistic Health ?

Many of you may have heard the term "holistic" or "holistic health" and possibly you think of something new age or alternative, such as meditating with crystals or dancing in the moonlight around a bonfire. Holistic health may include these practices for some but in general it is defined as a way of being and perceiving wellness.
Holistic or wholistic is philosophy of well-being that considers the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and balanced. To clearly understand the meaning of holistic health we must first understand the meaning of health as well as the meaning of wellness.

Defining Health
Health is defined as the functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism, at any moment in time, at both the cellular and global levels. In any organism, health is the ability to efficiently respond to challenges (stressors) and effectively restore and sustain a "state of balance," known as homeostasis. Illness is merely the absence of health. All organisms, from the simplest to the most complex, reside on a spectrum between 100% health and 0% health. So, what does this mean to you and I ? We can define healthy as a state of balance and unhealthy as a state of imblance. Healthy is individual and is considered the optimum state of wellness for a given person based on thier potential.
In other words an 80 year old man may be just as healthy as a 25 year old man, although the 25 year old man may be stronger, faster or have more stamina, but this does not mean the 80 year man is unhealthy. An 80 year old man may be free of illness and for his given potential be functioning optimally at 100%.

Defining Holism
To understand holistic, we must define the word holism. Holism can be viewed in metaphysical terms as the concept that all the properties of a given system or organism cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its component parts alone. Instead, the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave. Aristotle best summarises this as "The whole is more than the sum of its parts".

Defining Holistic Health
Applying he concept of holism to health we understand that the essential aspects of our being; physical, mental/emotional and spiritual are not seperate but are interwoven and so closely interrayted as to form one, which is our essential being. Each aspect of our essential being operates as a finely tuned syatem, one dependent on the other, each affecting the other in health or illness.
The diagram above illustrates the concept of holistic health, the triangle used for visualiztion is an equalaleral triangle and the positioning of each aspect is relative as all are equal and optimal health represents a balnace of the three essntial aspects of physical, mental, spiritual.
Although each essential aspect of our being is interelated to understand them we must define them individually.
What is the meaning of physical health, mental health and spiritual health ? According to the definition of holism, to be imblanced or unhealthy in any essential aspect of our being causes illness of the self as a whole. Generally the state of holistic balance can be referred to as wellness as health often refers to the physical but can also be applied to our emotional and spiritual components.

Physical Wellness
When defining physical health we refer to the state of our physical body, that which is tangible, our biological, physiological being . Physical health is strictly an organic concept which is focused on intensly by allopathic medicine such as western physicians and medical providers.
The human body and accompanying physiology (how it works) is a miraculaous, self repairing and highly complex system. Specialist in the medical sciences, doctors, nurses and professional therapists study in depth the many aspects and systems of the pysical body and how it may become ill and be brought back to wellness through science. The mindset of the past is slowly changing as people are realizing that prevention of illness is the key is wellness, not waiting for illness to strike then seeking a doctor. Prevention of physical illness has become a major industry as more and more people seek ways of staying healthy through nutrition and exercise. The majority of illnesses which effect our population day such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and stroke are related to unhealthy lifestyle choices and lack of prevention.

Emotional/Mental Wellness
Emotional/mental wellness is based on our own personal sense of self , of who we are. Self worth involves our sense of self esteem or how valuable we feel we are to ourselves and others. Emotional wellness involves our ability to feel joy and happiness in life on a consistent basis as well as our ability to cope with and move beyond emotional stress, pain and loss. This is not to say that during period of sadness, we are unhealthy, but it is our ability to recover from these states which determines emotional wellness.

Emotional/mental wellness also involves our awareness of our own individual emotions, the ability to identify what we are feeling and the awareness of how it affects our lives, realtionships and those around us. This includes happiness, joy and anger, fear and sadness, an emotionally healthy individual has the ability to consciously recognize a negative or destructive emotion and cope with it in a manner which prevents illness or difficulty for them.

Spiritual Wellness
Spirituality is often defined as ones personal connection with the divine or with humanity as a whole. Spirituality is also an intensely personal issue and may mean many different things to different people. Spirituality is closely related to aspects of love, the ability to love and to be loved as well as the ability to spiritually nourish and give to others.
The concept of "divine" may also be defined differently by many people, divine refers to a force, power or entity that is transcendent. Exactly what is divine may may undefinable but is a concept present in all spiritaul traditions, religions and disciplines. Transcedent means a power which is greater than we are and most often considered benevolent or a source of strength and support.

Less traditional religious belief systems refer to divine as the connection to all life that exists or a connection with life force energy in the universe. Monotheistic religions such as Christinaity and Catholocism assign specific idebtities to what is divine such as God, Jesus, Holy Ghost and the Virgin Mary. Greek mythology, a pantheistic beleif system, also assigns identities to what is divine in the form of multiple gods and goddesses.
Although we have seperated and defined each essential aspect of our holistic being, remeber that each aspect is one, not seperated. Imagine thta you have three glasses of water from three different oceans, each represents the body, mind and spirit and then you pour all three into one vessel, they then mix togther to the point where it is impossible to determine which ocean each came from or seperate them, yet they are each made up of unique and distinct aspects.

Practicing Holisting Health
Practicing holistic health is primarily focused on the prevention of illness and maintenance of balance with an awarenes of the essential aspects of our being. Practicing holistic wellness becomes a way of life a way of being in which we are mindful of behaviors and actions which nourish and support the wellbeing of our body, mnd and spirit.
Everyone may develop a unique and individual way of being that suits them and their uniquness, one that is healthy and balanced.

An Example of Holism in Daily Life
A good example of a practice which promotes holistic wellness is a ritual of mealtime. Although this may not always be possible it is an example of a practice which nourishes all aspects of our being.
Selecting healthy and nutritious foods for our meal nourishes our physical self, if possible spend some time eating this meal with people you love and care about such as friends and family or maybe someone who is less fortunate than yourself and does not have the company of others, before we begin to eat , give thanks for the food we have, thta we are fortunate to have this food.
Depending on our individual spiritual beleifs we may thank what is divine or transcendent to us. In sharing ourselves and our food and recognizing our good fortune we are nourishing ourselves and hopefully others emotionally and spiritually.
There are also many practices such as Yoga or T'ai Chi which encompass mental and spiritual components, but any activity can really become a holistic practice such a running and swimming if we use our imagination and stay mindful of our essential aspect of self.
